La diosa del pescado
The Goddess of Fish

Oil and pastel on card
height: 36cm
width: 23.5cm

Donated by Arete 1996

During the late 1980s Arete worked on a series of images of gods. Fish play an important part in GuaranĂ culture and the goddess of fish is here given status similar to that of Arasy, the mother of heaven in another work by Arete in ESCALA. This image is built up in many layers using a mixture of paint and crayon, with touches of gold applied with a brush. The central rectangle is made of a collaged piece of rough-textured hand-made cardboard embossed with the shape of the green fish and red pectoral with zig-zag design.
