Ofelia Rodríguez, La muerte sonriendo en paz sobre los caimanes, 2008

  1. 1

The Essex Collection of Art from Latin America commissioned Ofelia Rodriguez to produce La muerte sonriendo en paz sobre los caimanes (Death Smiling Peacefully over the Caimans) for ESCALA Artist Editions, established in 2008. This initiative covers the artists' production costs and, where appropriate, includes an element of professional development. All proceeds are returned to the artist and to the Collection to support its activities and further editions.

About the artist

Ofelia Rodríguez (b. 1946 Barranquilla, Colombia; lives and works in London, Barranquilla and Cartagena) produced 'La muerte sonriendo en paz sobre los caimanes’ in Bogotá at the renowned Taller Arte Dos Gráfico. Rodriguez is one of Colombia's foremost painters who works in a bold style that combines the colours and images of Colombia's Caribbean coast with Pop art and the popular traditions of Latin America broadly. In this silkscreen print the colours are more muted but the composition is characteristically strong and the images of alligators or caimans and skulls allude to symbols of life and death found throughout the Americas.
