The second in our series of Research Papers, Unravelling Threads explores issues related to textile production by the indigenous people of the Andean region of South America. While not all of the artworks in the exhibition stem directly from textiles or indigenous Andean heritage, they draw on a number of related ideas or threads.

ESCALA has begun its series of exhibitions at firstsite with a new series of publications: ESCALA Research Papers. The Papers are investigations into the artworks and artists in the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America that ESCALA commissions from researchers and curators.

Published in the Spring of 2004, issue 12 of the UECLAA Report looks back on the Collection's ten year history. Articles include the appointment of Rafael Viñoly as the architect for firstsite's new building and recent acquisitions.

Issue 11 of the UECLAA Report, published in the Spring of 2003, celebrated the life of Amilcar de Castro, explored the exhibition Transit at the University of Essex and listed the recent acquisitions.

Issue 10 of the UECLAA Report announced the awarding of a £300,000 grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Board (now Council) to digitise the Collection as well as recent exhibitons by Alex Gama at Gallery32 in London and León Ferrari at the Art Exchange in Colchester.
